Why Didn’t I Know About These Acoustic Guitars 20 Years ago?
Please like, comment and share the video if you can - I really want the world to know about these lovely people - and their utterly breathtaking works of art we call guitars.

In June 2024 I visited the Dowina Acoustic Guitar Workshop in Bratislava - Slovakia.
I have sold the biggest name guitar brands in the World but what I have experienced from Dowina guitars from the day I first played one - was different.
If there was ever a guitar brand that means so much more than just being a guitar - it's Dowina. Guitars may all look the same - but as Peter reminded me - Lots of fizzy drinks LOOK like Coca Cola! :)
Its taken me over a week to put this small piece together - I just wanted Peter s emotions that he conveyed to me to come across and I hope I have done him justice. My time spent with Peter was so very much appreciated. A lot of what he told me I didnt want to put on the video as it was quite personal but it really helped inspire me to convey the human story that I witnessed.
Cannot wait to see Peter again soon - along with the rest of the Dowina family :)

@@RichardsGuitarshop Doesn't take much investigating. You did it within the first 10 seconds, eyeing up the right bicep then a quick massage. Is that your warmup for effective blues playing? Or do you have a rash? I need to know to do the tutorial properly. I live near Chicago, but never see the blues players do it onstage. I suppose I could ask them. "Do I need to do curls to strenghten my blues chops?" Maybe so. Cheers!

@@RichardsGuitarshop Hope you don't mind a bit of levity. I actually really like British style blues a lot. Very authentic and inimitable. Unlike many of us here in America. The late Peter Green is my guy. Not an imitator. But one of a kind. So your points are not lost on me. I'm always intrigued by how the British adopted it so well. Much respect. @@Jahninkyou don’t sound like someone from Chicago. I always found them to be friendly folk. Rather than feed what comes across as an extraordinary level of cynicsm - I’ll put you out of your misery. I haven’t seen - neither has a single person in about 4 years mentioned it - but IF I am rubbing my bicep it’s because I suffer from bicep tendinitis. I have to prod it pretty much daily - don’t remember doing it on the day - and not a single person has noticed or cared - but it’s lovely to hear from you and I do hope your comments come with a smile as there’s nothing worse than posting online with negativity - it means you have some healing of your own to be done - maybe my video can help you if it’s guitar playing that’s getting you down

I do remember years ago someone accusing me of placing my arm closer to the camera to make my bicep look bigger! 😂. I have owned many furchs and played even more... I've never played or owned anything below a yellow series but I'm sure their lower tier guitars are more of the same. The OM is usually the easier of the 2 to get the melody to speak when playing fingerstyle. The bass is still sufficient to have a warm sound and the volume is way more than enough to be strummed. So, really if you prefer one over the other for some reason (sound, comfort, looks, ...) just get that one and stop thinking about it! However, if you play fingerstyle in alternate tunings, I 100% recommend the GC models. They simply have a bigger, richer sound which sounds magical when used with alternate tunings. I always preferred the OM models for standard tuning (and slight variations such as drop D), but the GC models gave me goosebumps when played in Open D tuning for example.

I've played dozens of Taylors, both 6 and 12 string, over the years and never yet played one I've actually liked. Your description of their sound as 'sterile' is absolutely bang on: in fact I'd go further and describe the Taylor sound as 'lifeless,' and often with a horrible mid-spike that I find deeply unpleasant. I also think they're absurdly expensive for what are in essence factory-made guitars and I can't understand why anybody would pay that much money for a mass-produced instrument. Were I in the lucky position to be able to drop a sizeable four-figure sum on an acoustic guitar I'd be going to the likes of Fylde or Brook and ordering a custom, handmade instrument to my own specification that would blow the likes of Taylor out of the water. I genuinely can't understand why more people don't go down the luthier route when spending significant sums of money on an instrument as opposed to buying a guitar off the shelf.

@@RichardsGuitarshop Hmmm, possibly, though to be honest, I'd rather support UK-based luthiers wherever possible were I to be spending that kind of money. No disrespect meant to Dowina, whose guitars I'm sure are sensational, but I'd really like to support the British guitar industry in these difficult times. Incidentally, on a related note, I enjoyed your video where you compared a Taylor 6-string to a number of Eastman guitars. I own an Eastman AC330e 12-string that I actually bought while I lived in China from a local friend who was an Eastman dealer. It required a bit of work to get it playing perfectly (including a new nut), but once fettled it was absolutely sensational: easily up there with the best 12-strings I've played from the likes of Guild, et al. A truly world class instrument for a fraction of the price the likes of Taylor charge for their guitars. It's also a thing of absolutely beauty: top-quality construction and amazing standard of finish (mine is in near-unobtainable sunburst and both looks and sounds stunning).

    • @RichardsGuitarshop
      @RichardsGuitarshop 14 днів тому

@@markbailey8252 Well I suppose it depends on context but when you say ="that kind of monet" you can buy a totally hand made guitar from Europe - bespoke build from less than £1500 which you certainly cannot do in England - and its much healthier to be supporting European builders who have a passion for actually building their instruments thant £2000 for a mass produced guitar from the USA, I understand your feelings and of course if it was possible to buy anything close to a Dowina from England of similar quality I would. I sell Auden for that reason - They are part produced in China (hand made in a small workshop) and completed un the UK workshop - so thats really cool. I was heavily let down by Lowden - so that didnt end well - and I suppose UK builders often sell direct maybe..

I think in this case the client is absolutely wrong. Wood is a living thing, so organic so unique. Expecting perfection from that which is imperfect, is madness. In fact, that mark is so unique, so natural that is a shame the client didn't want the guitar.

Like a few others in the comments here, I too disagree with your assessment. I have a Martin x series, bought for just under $500. I get so many compliments from others on the quality of its sound. It survived my days in a college dorm and a frat house without a scratch. Compared to other solid wood guitars around the same price range, I often think my x series Martin feels and sounds better. I might get flack for saying this, but recently I played a Gibson hummingbird, and it almost sounded cheap compared to my Martin. Not saying laminate is superior, but maybe it’s not as bad as the older folks think it is.

    • @RichardsGuitarshop

I want to talk to you without it being a right / wrong scenario and I live my every day with a desire to communicate in order to learn. What can I learn from this person? Naturally I will express my own truth - my own understanding - but that is there in order for you to challenge / improve my understanding etc. OK.... So.... You disagree with the assessment. Thats cool - because you own a guitar and you have experienced your life experiences with that instrument so who would I be to challeng that? I cannot deny you a lived experience - unless I was to say you were lying! So lets take that as a given. My personal lived experience is 29 years of picking up guitars - listening to them - playing them - dissecting them - in order to help my customers with recommendations. I have also spent that time listening to my customers - and every single guitarists views and feelings. With that lived experience I can tell you that Martin X series guitars are produced to be cheap instruments and dont come close - not close - to what is possible at the price. That statement does not deny you your own personal experience - and its possible that yours sounds INCREDIBLE. It can happen. Regarding your comment on laminate. No question at all - 100% in agreement that a well-made laminate acoustic can sound twice as good as a poor quality all solid wood guitar. There is SO much to an acoustic guitars tone well beyond that of the materials used - so I totally agree. Furch used to make a laminate by pressing thin slices together and OMG they sounded utterly incredible. Also - ageing of an instrument can do wonders to the tone - smoothing out and sweetening it up. If you cannot trust my word - I am sorry - and I am not saying I am right / wrong - but that is my lived experience - and it seems to match very closely with this incredibly detailed analysis of the guitar ua-cam.com/video/9JR2K-Kvwdc/v-deo.html

@@RichardsGuitarshop My comment was not intended to insult your intelligence and expertise here, but to add to the conversation that these guitars, while perhaps made to be cheap per Martin or Taylor’s otherwise high standards, can actually be a great choice for many buyers on a budget. But hey, how do you know I’m not totally biased here? After all I’m defending the guitar I own. Im not trying to present my guitar as something it’s not, but I find it interesting that these days cheap does not necessarily equal a bad or lesser product. That being said, if I was going to drop $1200 or even $800 on a guitar, I would likely be getting something all wood.

@@jackbobo4247 I am sorry if I misinterpreted your comments. I am an arse. I have ADHD and apparently one of the symptoms is to read things way more personally than maybe is the case. Thank you for being so considerate in your reply. To give some context, here is what I may recommend for under £500. There are 17 customer reviews and you can check out their views. All solid woods - hand made an they sound utterly incredible. This is the benchmark for me I think if I were making a comparison. rguitars.co.uk/products/eastman-e1-om-inc-100-professional-setup-added-value?variant=6876099346467. You have raised such an important point which I totally agree with - well a couple in fact. 1) Was the laminate thing - yes you can get great sounding guitars that happen to have laminate back and sides. 2). A guitar can sound awesome - just because it does? If that makes sense? Sometimes no ryme or reason - it just does! :). Thanks again for chatting - I appreciate it.

I just revisited this video and, although I liked the first guitar most the last time I watched this, today I'm picking up a ringing noise from one of the treble strings. I have a hunch a quarter turn of the truss would fix that. Also, every time you lifted your arm off a guitar, I would hear the tone noticeably open up. And that right there is why I have installed an armrest on every one of my acoustic guitars, four of which are Eastman.

The Spruce is a bit more airy, also a wee boost of the High Treble, almost Chimey and Ringing, very Nice though; Not Harsh. The Cedar is kind of boosted in the low Mid and Higher Mid, with very Wee Roll off in the Highs; which overall is a Sweet and Warmer Sound than the Spruce. BOTH have Full across Even Tones both Strumming and Picking: a Testament to Quality Woods I would Say!! In Final: Both are Excellent Guitars, so in Choosing which One: it Depends what You'll Be Using it for; RE: IN a Group or on Stage, the Spruce will Cut Better in the Mix with the Other Instruments!! Whereas the Cedar would more likely Warm up the Overall Sound and Tones with a Solo Singer Songwriter, with a Warm, Mellow, Wide Brush of Tones to Compliment and Surround the Singer's Voice without Overpowering it!! Of Course, Both 'could be' made to Sound 'almost' Identical if Put through a Good on Stage Mixer, then EQd slightly different from each other and with some slight added Compression on the Mixer Channels, and some very slight barely there added Reverb on each Guitar; to Warm and Fill the Tone and Sustain of each Guitar. 👍👍🎵🎶🍀

I do like your lessons. I know quite a bit the theory and that makes it absolutely interesting. So thanks for the lesson. Looking forward to the next.

It is my absolute pride and joy! There is some magic going on with Dowina 😊 my guitar has transformed me as a musician. It’s the most beautiful sounding acoustic guitar and I’m spreading the word! If you are here and wondering if you should get one, then yes! do it! You won’t regret it! ❤😊 And, check out Richards Guitar shop. Ohhh thank you so much. Your blog was a total inspiration in its own right - I cant thank you enough for the energy you put into it. You know whats so sad? When I met Peter (the chap in the video) he greeted me like I was his long lost brother. He was literally emotional. I steadily got to realise that he had been watching all my videos - and grateful for someone actually caring about the heart of what they are - He felt like someone in the industry was finally actually interested - or cared. What does that tell you about retail? Anyway - Erika constantly reminds me never to be upset about it - and to focus on the many positives that happen when people share common values - as you do - and everyone who loves the guitars. Anyway I am rambling..... THANK YOU!

Dowina guitars are beautiful. It was nice to see Richard going to the workshop. I know he loves and appreciates the quality of them from his videos. I found Richard's website and his enthusiasm was evident so I had to get a Dowina. I now have 3 and they are stunning. I hope they make a 12 string at some point in the future.

Amazing company, and for their instruments to be so beautiful at the prices that they ask, conveys a level of humility and unpretentious goodwill to musicians that you're never going to encounter with more celebrated boutique builders.
